What is the Plasma Pen?
The Plasma Pen, sometimes called fibroblast therapy or fibroblasting, is one of the latest cosmetic procedures to address wrinkles, collagen depletion, volume loss, and sagging skin. As we age, our dermal layer (deeper layer of skin) thins as the skin’s fibroblasts slow production of collagen and elastin. This production drastically slows around age 25 and leads to a “deflated” look, causing lines, creases, sagging, and an overall more haggard appearance.
The Plasma Pen works by converting electrical energy from the surrounding air into an energized oxygen-and-nitrogen plasma stream, which we transmit into the skin’s surface via a probe. When this gas touches the skin’s epidermis (surface layer), there is an immediate tissue contraction along with thermal disruption. By delivering precise and controlled heat and trauma to the skin, we can signal your fibroblasts to ramp up collagen and elastin production, resulting in impressive skin tightening and rejuvenation.
Treatments with our Plasma Pen in Rochester are one of the few options outside plastic surgery that can significantly improve sagging eyelids. Patients who come to Envision seeking improvement in firmness and sagging skin around their eyes are in luck! Dr. Whipple can discuss your surgical options at Envision Eye Surgery and whether she thinks Plasma Pen treatments would be a good place to start before full blepharoplasty.
The magic behind collagen and elastin
Many of our patients come in wondering exactly how collagen and elastin help the skin. Some try products such as lotions and creams that have collagen and elastin infused in them. Unfortunately, the molecules in these products are too big to penetrate the skin.
Collagen and elastin fibers make up the structure of the skin. Simply speaking, they’re the framework that keeps everything together. Collagen gives the skin firmness while elastin gives skin the elasticity needed to bounce back.
Both fibers are plentiful when you’re younger, but as you age, sun damage and other factors break down those fibers. In addition, long-term sun exposure degrades the integrity of our skin.
The only proven way to boost collagen and elastin production is by turning on fibroblast cells. Fibroblast cells are responsible for making collagen and elastin, and a skin wound forces them to boost production.
That’s what makes the Plasma Pen in Rochester, New York so effective. By creating tiny surface wounds and delivering precise heat, we trigger fibroblasts, which gives you that collagen boost needed to fix signs of aging.

Before the procedure
Before you get treatments with our Plasma Pen in Rochester, you should first schedule a free consultation with our team to determine your exact skin concerns and treatment priorities. We’ll also discuss your past skincare efforts, your current regimen and lifestyle, and the amount of downtime you’ll have available after treatment to make sure your time with us is effective.
Then, depending on your specific goals, we will create your unique treatment plan.
Prior to treatment, avoid sun tanning, spray tanning, or any other tanning methods for 4 to 6 weeks. Ideally, you should use SPF 40+ daily to prep your skin in the weeks leading up to treatment. Additionally, do not schedule any laser treatments, chemical peels, or injectables (Botox, fillers, etc.) for 3 to 4 weeks prior to a Plasma Pen treatment to the same area. Discontinue using topical retinoids for at least 4 days before the procedure.
During the procedure
When you come in for your Plasma Pen treatment at our Rochester medical spa, we will use a topical anesthetic to numb the skin. This will maximize comfort for you so that the process is virtually painless.
Our experienced medical professional will then use the Plasma Pen handpiece to create tiny plasma “dots” rapidly to the skin’s surface.
Once the procedure is done, we will apply an ointment, and you’re good to go!
After the procedure
Following your Plasma Pen appointment in Rochester, New York, your skin may be red and irritated with a grid pattern of brown dots. You may want to take some social downtime or arrange working from home while you heal, as you’ll likely experience redness, swelling, scabbing, and flaking in the days following your Plasma Pen treatment.
We want to make sure that our clients:
-Avoid exercise, heat, steam, and any activity that causes sweat for at least 48 hours
-Apply cold compresses as needed for swelling, and sleep with the head elevated
–Do not pick, scratch, or otherwise try to remove your scabs. Let them fall off naturally to avoid scarring or post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation
-Be very strict about sun protection (wear SPF 40+, oversize sunglasses, and a wide-brimmed hat) for at least 2 weeks
-Avoid makeup until all scabs have naturally fallen off
-Do not wax the treated area for at least 21 days
-Do not use grainy scrubs, products with harsh active ingredients (like acids and retinoids), or new-to-you skincare products for at least 3 weeks
Most Envision Aesthetics clients start to see Plasma Pen results 6 to 8 weeks post-treatment, with results continuing to improve for several months after that. Clients notice tighter, plumper, and more moisturized-looking skin that they can maintain for years with maintenance appointments at Envision Aesthetics.
