If you are curious about booking your first dermal filler injection, your top questions may be surrounding dermal filler side effects and what you can expect after your treatment.

As the premier provider of dermal fillers in Rochester, Envision Aesthetics often helps men and women in the area look and feel their best by treating their wrinkles, plumping their pouts, and filling & contouring their cheeks. Keep reading to learn more about what to expect in the days, weeks, and months after you get dermal fillers in Rochester.

What are dermal fillers?

Dermal fillers are FDA-approved injectable products commonly made of hyaluronic acid, or HA (except Sculptra® – more on that later). Hyaluronic acid is a substance found in your skin. Together with collagen, it acts as your body’s natural volumizer, cushioning skin cells and helping them retain moisture.

As we age, our body’s stores of hyaluronic acid gradually deplete and production of collagen slows, leaving you with flat, dull, saggy, or wrinkled skin. Dermal fillers are an efficient yet non-surgical way to temporarily treat these common skin concerns.

With dermal fillers, we can plump and fill in wrinkles and lines around the mouth, eyes, and nose一in addition to plumping lips, lifting cheeks & chins, and rejuvenating the appearance of aged hands.

What types of fillers does Envision Aesthetics offer?

At Envision Aesthetics, we offer several types (brands) of dermal fillers in Rochester to address our patients’ concerns. We use two products from the Juvéderm® family, along with Sculptra®, Restylane®, and Belotero®.

Juvéderm®

Juvéderm uses hyaluronic acid to instantly smooth away moderate to severe lines around your mouth and nose. This product replaces the hyaluronic acid your skin has lost over time to smooth smile lines and vertical lip lines, bringing back youthfulness and volume to your face.

Juvéderm fillers can last from 6 to 18 months, depending on how much we inject and how quickly your body metabolizes it.

Juvéderm® Voluma™

Juvéderm Voluma is an injectable hyaluronic acid gel that instantly adds volume to the cheek area thanks to its thicker texture. This filler is ideal for treating age-related loss of volume and lifting and contouring your cheekbones, chin, and jowls.

Most patients are happy with the results of their Voluma treatments for 6 to 18 months before returning to our office for more injections.

Sculptra®

Sculptra is a dermal filler made of poly-L-lactic acid, rather than HA. The product instantly replaces facial volume and corrects deep lines, creases and folds. The special thing about Sculptra is its ability to jumpstart collagen production in the skin. This means that even after your body has absorbed the product, you can still see results for many months after.

You can expect the effects your Sculptra injections to last up to 3 years. Because of the collagen-producing results, your appearance will continue to improve over time!

Restylane®

Restylane is an HA-based dermal filler that temporarily adds volume to the lips, cheeks, under-eye hollows, and hands. We can also use Restylane to smooth wrinkles and fine lines and to fill in depressed scars.

Restylane fillers last from 6 to 12 months before your body metabolizes the filler and you need additional injections to maintain the results.

Belotero®

Belotero is a lightweight hyaluronic acid filler that can be used on the face and neck to treat bothersome folds, creases, and wrinkles. Belotero is also especially effective at filling in tear troughs to create a more awake appearance.

We typically find that our patients are happy with the results of their Belotero injections for up to a year, although not everyone metabolizes the product at the same rate.

Here’s what happens when you come to Envision for fillers in Rochester

Before receiving injections with dermal fillers in Rochester, you’ll first consult with our experienced physician, Dr. Katherine Whipple. This will help us understand all your concerns and goals for your skin. Then, we will schedule your filler injections at our Rochester office. (These injections may occur in combination with BOTOX® or other skin treatments to properly treat all fine lines and wrinkles!)

Dr. Whipple will perform the injections to fill in your wrinkles and lines, plump your lips, replace lost volume in your cheeks or temples, or some combination of these based on your individual features and concerns.

Questions to ask your provider before receiving fillers in Rochester

What are your qualifications?

This should be the first question you ask at any consultation for dermal fillers. If a provider cannot readily supply their licensing information, tell you about their ongoing education protocols, and show before/after photos, leave and contact Envision Aesthetics instead!

Dr. Whipple at Envision Aesthetics has extensive training and is fully licensed and certified to perform the filler injections that we provide day in and out at our Rochester office.

Are there any side effects from fillers? Will it hurt?

Everyone reacts differently to facial injections like fillers. However, it’s important to know that there are no significant risks or pain associated with fillers.

You can go right back to your daily routine after your filler appointment, and most patients report feeling minimal discomfort during the injections. That said, we do recommend planning your appointment at a time that you can go home and lie down for a few hours in case you experience redness or swelling.

Will my fillers look natural?

Pay attention to your injector’s before-and-after patient photos. Do the results he or she provides look too subtle, too obvious, or just right? If your philosophy and goals don’t match at the outset, it’s likely they will not satisfy you with the results they produce.

The key to natural-looking fillers is taking a conservative treatment approach. You want to subtly enhance your features and smooth your skin—not look like an entirely different person or have anyone guess that you have “had work done.”

The physician at Envision Aesthetics helps our patients achieve their best look, while still appearing just like themselves.

How much do fillers in Rochester cost?

Make sure you know exactly what you will spend by the end of your consultation.

The cost of fillers in Rochester at Envision Aesthetics largely depends on how much product we are injecting and where we are injecting.

Fillers are administered and sold by the syringe. At your initial consultation with us, we will provide you with the exact amount of filler you’ll need to purchase to achieve the final look you are after.

Immediate filler side effects

Complications and negative dermal filler side effects are rare and typically occur because of unknown (or unreported to your injector) allergies, improper injection methods, or incorrect dosage.

You’ve probably seen someone who has had too much filler, which can look swollen or unnaturally plumped. Other negative (& rare) side effects of fillers can include infection, injury to blood vessels, or movement of the filler to an unintended location.

The most common filler side effects we see are redness and swelling, which usually resolves within a few hours.

How to avoid filler side effects

The best way to avoid negative filler side effects is to do proper research before selecting a provider and to make sure you tell your injector about your allergies, your medical history, and any medications you are taking.

To reduce the potential swelling or bruising at the injection site, we recommend:

• Avoiding blood-thinning medications like aspirin, ibuprofen, Advil, and Aleve for one week before injection
• Avoid supplements like St. John’s Wort, ginkgo biloba, primrose oil, garlic, ginseng, and Vitamin E for one week before injection
• Avoid topical retinol products, glycolic acid, or any “anti-aging” products for 2 days prior
• Do not wax, bleach, tweeze, or use any other hair removal methods to the treatment area for 2 days prior
• Avoid alcohol for at least 24 hours before your injection

When you come for your consultation at Envision Aesthetics, we can show you our licenses and go over our qualifications, training, and continuing education with you. We can also provide patient testimonials and before and after photos.

Rest assured knowing you are in highly experienced hands when you come to Envision for your filler injections in Rochester.

Long-term filler side effects – what happens in the weeks after my injections?

Though the results of dermal filler injections are immediate, you will notice the best side effects of fillers about 1 to 2 weeks after injection, when the product has “settled” and any swelling has subsided. If you receive Sculptra injections, you will notice results continuing to improve for 4 to 8 months.

6 to 18 months after the injections (or longer with Sculptra), you will notice signs of aging and volume loss beginning to return. We recommend scheduling follow-up treatments to maintain your results.

The good news for the people who experience bad filler side effects? The results are not permanent, and we can even dissolve HA-based fillers with hyaluronidase if you are not happy with your final look.
