Envision Eye & Aesthetics

What is a Plasma Pen Treatment Like?

When performed by a medical professional with specialized training—like the experts at Envision Aesthetics—treatments with our Plasma Pen™ are considered very safe and an extremely effective way to target the signs of aging, sagging skin, acne scars, and more.

Clients who come to us with eye concerns are in extra luck! Dr. Whipple, owner and operator of Envision Aesthetics and Envision Eye Surgery, has extensive experience in surgical and nonsurgical procedures for eyes. If a client presents with significant skin laxity or drooping eyelids that impair their vision, she can discuss surgical procedures, like a lower eyelid correction and/or eyelid enhancement, to rejuvenate the eye area.

Let’s go through what to expect with Plasma Pen treatments at our Rochester, NY office.

Initial Consultation

All clients at Envision Aesthetics first receive an in-depth skin consultation with a trained and experienced specialist. During this consultation, we’ll discuss your relevant medical history, evaluate your skin with the VISIA® imaging system, and listen to your concerns and goals for aesthetic treatments.

From there, we can recommend aesthetic treatments that we believe will get you where you want to be. For those with concerns like:

  • Dark circles or bags under the eyes
  • Lip lines (“smoker’s lines”)
  • Crow’s feet
  • Forehead lines
  • Jowls
  • Skin laxity
  • Nasolabial folds

We may recommend treatments with the Plasma Pen, or other skin rejuvenation treatments. Don’t be surprised if your customized treatment plan includes a combination of procedures—this is how we deliver beautiful, comprehensive results!

Prepare for Treatment

Prior to treatment, avoid sun tanning, spray tanning, or any other tanning methods for 4 to 6 weeks. Ideally, you should use SPF 40+ daily to prep your skin in the weeks leading up to treatment. Additionally, do not schedule any laser treatments, chemical peels, or injectables (Botox, fillers, etc.) for 3 to 4 weeks prior to a Plasma Pen treatment in Rochester. Discontinue use of topical retinoids and other active ingredients that make your skin more sensitive to the sun (e.g. AHAs and BHAs) for at least 4 days before the procedure.

Treatment

To perform a Plasma Pen treatment in Rochester, we first apply a topical anesthetic to numb the treatment area(s). This maximizes your comfort and makes the treatment virtually painless.

Your specialist will then use the Plasma Pen handpiece to create tiny plasma “dots” rapidly on the skin’s surface. These reddish-brown dots result from the plasma arc meeting the skin’s surface. Once we’ve treated the indicated areas, we will apply an ointment to keep the treated area clean and moist.

Immediately After Treatment

Immediately after a Plasma Pen treatment, the treated skin may appear red and irritated with a grid pattern of plasma dots. We will send you home with recommended post-treatment medical-grade skincare products, a cold compress, and specific care instructions to ensure optimal results.

What is recovery from a Plasma Pen treatment like?

We won’t sugarcoat it—you probably won’t want to leave the house for a few days post-Plasma Pen treatment without a pair of oversize sunglasses and a mask. We recommend arranging to work from home and clearing your schedule of any important dinners or events.

In the days following a Plasma Pen at our Rochester office, you’ll experience redness, swelling, scabbing, and flaking of skin.

We want to make sure that our clients:

    • Avoid exercise, heat, steam, and any activity that causes sweat for at least 48 hours
    • Apply cold compresses as needed for swelling, and sleep with the head elevated
    • Do not pick, scratch, or otherwise try to remove your scabs. Let them fall off naturally to avoid scarring or post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH)
    • Be very strict about sun protection (i.e. wear SPF 40+, oversize sunglasses, and a wide-brimmed hat) for at least 2 weeks
    • Avoid makeup until all scabs have naturally fallen off
    • Do not wax the treated area for at least 21 days
    • Do not use grainy scrubs, products with harsh active ingredients (like acids and retinoids), or new-to-you skincare products for at least 3 weeks

Most clients start to see the Plasma Pen’s amazing lifting and tightening results 6 to 8 weeks post-treatment, with continuously improving results for several months after that. Clients notice tighter, plumper, and more moisturized-looking skin that they can maintain for years with maintenance appointments at Envision Aesthetics.
