The difference between BOTOX & fillers
Many of our patients are under the impression that the words “BOTOX” and “filler” are interchangeable. But that’s far from true. BOTOX and fillers are two totally different treatments, with different recovery times and outcomes. Let’s talk through each one to help you better see the difference between BOTOX and fillers.
What is BOTOX?
BOTOX is a specially formulated product that targets the muscles underneath the skin. These are the muscles that create wrinkles by repeating similar movements (such as laughing or frowning) over time. When BOTOX is injected, it acts to relax these muscles in order to prevent the formation of wrinkles in the first place. Therefore, the appearance of wrinkles begins to fade.
What are fillers?
Dermal fillers, on the other hand, such as Restylane and Voluma, are composed of hyaluronic acid. Fillers are injections primarily used to improve the appearance of sunken cheeks, wrinkles around the nose and mouth (like laugh lines, eleven’s, lips, and frown lines). These injections are administered just under the skin. Fillers are meant to replenish the skin by creating the appearance of volume and smoothness underneath the skin. It works so well because it actually prompts natural processes in the skin to plumpen in the area of injection.
To summarize… BOTOX reduces wrinkles by relaxing underlying muscles • Fillers reduce wrinkles by adding volume.

Are fillers safe?
Fillers are FDA-approved for helping to create smoother and fuller skin in the face, cheeks, lips, and even the back of the hand!

Do fillers hurt?

The good news is that we provide pain management in the form of numbing our patients. In addition, the fillers have numbing agents in them, too! Because of this, many of our patients tell us they experience very little pain or discomfort during and after receiving fillers at Envision Aesthetics Rochester. Our physicians are pros at administering fillers in a way that’s easy and effective. Plus, we apply a topical anesthetic in the form of a cream prior to the injection! Afterwards, you may feel some swelling or bruising; this is a typical reaction to receiving fillers, and should subside in a few hours.
What are the side effects of fillers?
Because filler injections are minimally invasive, side effects aren’t very common. A few side effects of fillers we’ve seen in the past include reactions to the needle/injection process in general, including redness, itching, pimples, and swelling. Your Envision Aesthetics expert will thoroughly cover all of this information with you before you receive your injection.
Can I get BOTOX in my lips?
BOTOX does not add volume to the skin. It is only designed to relax the targeted muscles and reduce the appearance of wrinkles. With this being said, BOTOX is a great option for smoothing the fine lines around the mouth. If you’re looking to plump your lips to make them look more voluminous, fillers are the way to go.
Can I make facial expressions with BOTOX?
Unlike what pop culture would lead you to believe, BOTOX does not change your facial expressions. The difference is that, after receiving BOTOX, your expressions won’t be accompanied by the wrinkles of the skin that they once did.
