Besides being the windows to the soul, the eyes are also the first place to give in to the toll that gravity, aging, and sun damage takes on the skin. It’s a rude awakening—literally—to look in the mirror and see drooping eyelids, under-eye bags, or dark circles, despite getting a glorious night’s sleep.
Until recently, you had to settle with this look as your new normal (and invest in big sunglasses). That, or go under the knife for a traditional eyelid lift or blepharoplasty. But that was then.
Envision Aesthetics is proud to now offer a nonsurgical eyelid lifts in Rochester with our Plasma Pen™ device. This revolutionary fibroblasting treatment allows us to precisely target your biggest concerns around the delicate eye area with no incisions or needles!
Keep reading to learn more about the Plasma Pen and how you can achieve dramatic lifting and tightening results around your eyes.
What is plasma? How does the Plasma Pen work?
Let’s enlist the help of MIT to explain this one Plasma, sometimes called the “4th state of matter,” is really, really hot matter. It’s literally star stuff, comprising over 99% of the visible universe. We can see plasma in the form of stars, lightning, neon signs, and the Northern Lights.
To create plasma, matter must be so hot that it rips away the electrons from the atoms, creating an ionized gas. This produces a soup of positively charged particles (ions) and negatively charged particles (electrons).
Scientists have harnessed the power of plasma for all sorts of technological wonders. Everything from making rocket ships and computer chips, to heating things to temperatures hotter than the sun’s core, to even destroying biological hazards in the environment!
…And now you’re probably wondering where skin rejuvenation comes in.
It turns out the skin responds excellently to controlled plasma “micro-injuries!” To treat the skin with plasma energy, we place a plasma probe approximately 1mm from the skin’s surface. When the probe’s thermal energy mixes with oxygen and nitrogen in the surrounding air, it creates a plasma arc. Once this arc contacts your skin, it vaporizes. This forces an immediate contraction of the surface tissue (epidermis) and disrupts the deep layer of skin (the dermis).
When the dermis registers an injury to the epidermis, your body signals the fibroblasts in the dermis to produce more elastin and collagen. This promotes long-term skin rejuvenation.
What happens during a nonsurgical eye lift in Rochester?
When performed by a medical professional with specialized training in the eye area, like the experts at Envision Aesthetics, a nonsurgical eye lift in Rochester is considered very safe and an effective alternative to eyelid surgery.
Clients who come to us with eye concerns are in extra luck! Dr. Whipple, owner and operator of Envision Aesthetics and Envision Eye Surgery, has extensive experience in surgical and nonsurgical procedures for eyes. If a client presents with significant skin laxity or drooping eyelids that impair their vision, she can discuss surgical procedures to rejuvenate the eye area. These procedures can include a lower eyelid correction and/or eyelid enhancement.
Let’s go through what to expect with Plasma Pen treatments.
All clients at Envision Aesthetics first receive an in-depth skin consultation with a trained and experienced specialist. During this consultation, we’ll discuss your relevant medical history, evaluate your skin with the VISIA® imaging system, and listen to your concerns and goals for aesthetic treatments.
From there, we can recommend aesthetic treatments that we believe will get you where you want to be. For those with concerns like:
- Dark circles or bags under the eyes
- Lip lines (“smoker’s lines”)
- Crow’s feet
- Forehead lines
- Skin laxity
- Nasolabial folds
We may recommend treatments with the Plasma Pen, or other skin rejuvenation treatments. Don’t be surprised if your customized treatment plan includes a combination of procedures—this is how we deliver beautiful, comprehensive results!
If we believe we can better achieve your goals with plastic surgery, Dr. Whipple can consult with you and answer all your questions.
Prepare for Treatment
Prior to treatment, avoid sun tanning, spray tanning, or any other tanning methods for 4 to 6 weeks. Ideally, you should use SPF 40+ daily to prep your skin in the weeks leading up to treatment. Additionally, do not schedule any laser treatments, chemical peels, or injectables (Botox, fillers, etc.) for 3 to 4 weeks prior to a Plasma Pen treatment to the eye area. Discontinue using topical retinoids for at least 4 days before the procedure.
To perform a nonsurgical eye lift in Rochester, we first use a topical anesthetic to numb the skin. This maximizes your comfort and makes the treatment virtually painless.
Your specialist will then use the Plasma Pen handpiece to create tiny plasma “dots” rapidly on the skin’s surface. These reddish-brown dots result from the plasma arc meeting the skin’s surface. Once we’ve treated the indicated areas, we will apply an ointment to keep the treated area clean and moist.
After your nonsurgical eye lift treatment, your skin may appear red and irritated with a grid pattern of plasma dots. We will send you home with recommended post-treatment medical-grade skincare products, a cold compress, and specific care instructions to ensure optimal results.
What is recovery from a Plasma Pen treatment like?
We won’t sugarcoat it—you probably won’t want to leave the house for a few days post-Plasma Pen eye lift treatment without a pair of oversize sunglasses. In the days following your nonsurgical eye lift at our Rochester office, you’ll experience redness, swelling, scabbing, and flaking of skin.
We want to make sure that our clients:
- Avoid exercise, heat, steam, and any activity that causes sweat for at least 48 hours
- Apply cold compresses as needed for swelling, and sleep with the head elevated
- Do not pick, scratch, or otherwise try to remove your scabs. Let them fall off naturally to avoid scarring or post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH)
- Be very strict about sun protection (i.e. wear SPF 40+, oversize sunglasses, and a wide-brimmed hat) for at least 2 weeks
- Avoid makeup until all scabs have naturally fallen off
- Do not wax the treated area for at least 21 days
- Do not use grainy scrubs, products with harsh active ingredients (like acids and retinoids), or new-to-you skincare products for at least 3 weeks
Most clients start to see lifting and tightening results around their eyes 6 to 8 weeks post-treatment, with continuously improving results for several months after that. Clients notice tighter, plumper, and more moisturized-looking eye area skin, which they can maintain for years with maintenance appointments at Envision Aesthetics.
Paired treatments to maintain or improve on Plasma Pen results
Though it offers powerful eye lifting and tightening results, a nonsurgical eye lift is not a one and done procedure. To maintain the results, you need to make sure you keep up with your skin care routine at home (using medical-grade products) and continue visiting Envision Aesthetics for eye-rejuvenating treatments.
Using hyaluronic acid (HA)-based fillers, we can fill in and minimize the appearance of hollow under eyes, wrinkles, lines, and folds. The thin skin around the eye area looks amazingly refreshed and moisturized after treatment with fillers.
We can also use fillers to lift and smooth other areas of the face for overall facial rejuvenation after a nonsurgical eye lift in Rochester. With fillers, we can:
- Lift and contour cheeks
- Create a sharper jawline
- Augment the chin or nose
- Enhance lips
- Fill in facial wrinkles and folds
- Minimize indented or depressed scars
Clients leave our office looking years younger when they visit for a nonsurgical eye lift and filler treatments!
At Envision Aesthetics, we are proud to offer Botox®, Dysport®, and Xeomin® injections to clients from our Rochester office. These effective neuromodulators quickly and easily reverse the signs of aging by minimizing the appearance of dynamic wrinkles, or expression lines.
To provide a softness to the eye area, we place injections to relax the facial muscles that contract to create the signs of aging. These can include crow’s feet wrinkles, horizontal forehead lines, and “11 lines” between the brows. Regular Botox appointments are a great way to maintain wrinkle-free eyes following a nonsurgical eye lift—we address immediate wrinkles while preventing new ones from forming!
Other uses for Botox or another neurotoxin in the face include correcting a downturned mouth, minimizing a “gummy smile,” and treating frown lines and nasalis lines around the mouth and nose, respectively.
RF microneedling is a revolutionary treatment that utilizes tiny “micro” needles that penetrate to the depth of our choosing and release radiofrequency energy.
Microneedling with radiofrequency (RF) is a great, minimally invasive combination that stimulates collagen and addresses sun damage and other common signs of aging. Including microneedling in a client’s treatment plan helps us reduce the appearance of wrinkles, fine lines, scars, stretch marks, and smaller areas of loose skin, especially in areas that require precision, like around the eyes.
Laser & Light Treatments
Treatments that harness the healing power of light, like BBL™, Halo®, and MicroLaserPeel®,work wonders to turn back the clock on skin aging. This treatment isn’t just effective on the eyes and face, but also the neck, decollete, and even the hands.
Your unique skin type, concerns, ability to tolerate downtime, and goals for treatment help us determine exactly which laser and light treatment(s) at Envision Aesthetics will work best for you.
