Summer is a favorite season for many because of the time spent outdoors, on vacations, and general relaxation mode One of the not-so-great aspects of summer is how the excess sun exposure affects our skin. While many of us love a bronze tan from the sun’s powerful rays, we see an uptick in sun damage concerns our patients want to treat near the end of the summer.
At Envision, we love helping our patients feel amazing in their skin. Sun damage is a common concern for many of our patients at the end of the summer months. Today we’re discussing our favorite end of summer facials for damaged skin treatments in Rochester at Envision Aesthetics.
What causes sun damage?
Sun damage is a type of hyperpigmentation caused by, you guess it, excess sun exposure. Sun damage is also known as photoaging, as it can expedite the aging process from too much sunlight on the skin.
Sun damage happens when ultraviolet (UV) rays penetrate unprotected skin, changing the DNA at the cellular level. This process deeply penetrates the skin layers, so sometimes sun damage does not show up right away. At Envision, we have the fantastic VISIA skin analysis system that allows us to pinpoint exact areas and extent of sun damage.
A lot of factors can cause sun damage, like:
- Going out in the sun without adequate sunscreen protection from UVA and UVB rays
- Your skin color can make you more susceptible
- Geographic location with latitude and climate
What does sun damage look like?
The most common form of sun damage is brown patches (melasma) on the skin. Other signs of photoaging include:
- Fine lines and wrinkles
- Pigmentation changes
- Skin laxity
- Rough texture
- Broken capillaries
- Redness
Other common skin issues at the end of summer
Though the primary concern for most people by the end of summer is damaged skin from the sun, we also treat a lot of patients for newly formed fine lines and dehydrated skin. Just like the sun speeds up the aging process, it can also cause our skin to dry out faster, leaving you skin feeling flaky and dull.
The good news about end of summer skin concerns: Envision Aesthetics has fantastic facials to improve your skin from within!
So now that we’ve covered what sun damage is and how it happens, let’s discuss some of our favorite damaged skin treatments in Rochester at our skin clinic!
Halo Laser
What it is
Halo Laser is the world’s first hybrid fractional laser that works to correct sun damage, uneven skin tone, and other signs of the natural aging process. This laser is unique because it is non-invasive and customizable to reach both the upper and lower layers of the skin for total renewal!
Halo laser treats the following conditions in about 1 to 1.5 hours with 3 to 5 days of recovery time:
- Wrinkles
- Sun damage
- Enlarged pores
- Acne
- Acne scars
- Hyperpigmentation
- Uneven skin tone
- Melasma
- Rosacea
Halo uses a hybrid fractional laser technology to reach deep skin layers while leaving the epidermis outer layer intact. This makes it much more gentle than other laser treatments while still producing phenomenal results.
How it helps damaged skin
Halo uses two types of laser wavelengths in the targeted treatment areas: one instantly vaporizes imperfections on the skin’s surface while the other heats deeper skin layers to stimulate collagen and elastin production. These two substances are responsible for the structure and bounce in your skin, so more production gives you progressive results, where your skin gets better and better over time.
MicroLaserPeel®
What it is
MicroLaserPeel® by Sciton is much different from a traditional peel. It uses a powerful erbium laser to resurface the skin with far less downtime and recovery than other harsher lasers.
Our MicroLaserPeel treats the following concerns in just 20-30 minutes with 3-4 days of recovery time:
- Lines and wrinkles
- Scars
- Keratosis
- Sun damage
- Freckles
- Pigment irregularities
How it helps damaged skin
MicoLaserPeel harnesses the power of concentrated light waves to remove the thin outer layer of damaged skin. We can customize your treatment for your skin goals depending on the extent of damage and available downtime. By removing this layer of dead skin, this allows new, healthy cells to emerge, giving you a renewed, glowing complexion!
Forever Young BBL™
What it is
Forever Young BBL is an FDA-approved procedure that utilizes broad-spectrum light (BBL) to transform your complexion–it even reverses the gene expression in your skin’s DNA to younger gene expression, making you look years younger. BBL uses intense pulsed light to accomplish these effects and remarkably improve your skin.
Forever Young BBL takes 30 to 40 minutes to treat the following skin concerns:
- Rosacea
- Age spots
- Wrinkles
- Acne
- Acne Scars
- Sun damage
- Bruises
- Skin laxity
How it helps damaged skin
BBL evenly disperses heat and light energy using its dual-lamp pulsing technology in the treatment areas. This light energy produces wavelengths that work to repair both the surface skin tissue and deeper skin layers–all while leaving undamaged cells protected. This light stimulates your body’s natural production of collagen and elastin to repair, plump, and firm your skin.
Salt Facial
What it is
Salt Facial is a three-step facial procedure that helps our providers restore, replenish, and rejuvenate the skin for a lit-from-within glow. We evenly exfoliate the skin with sea salt and use a handpiece to purify and remove the top layer of dead skin cells and eliminate oil and other pore-clogging impurities.
Salt Facials take just 60 minutes with no downtime to treat a large variety of skin concerns:
- Pigmentation
- Uneven tone & texture
- Acne
- Stretch marks
- Acne scars
- Enlarged pores
- Dehydrated skin
- Redness
How it helps damaged skin
After removing dead skin cells and impurities, we continue the treatment with ultrasound technology to deliver antioxidants, peptides, and hyaluronic acid deep into the skin. This delivers extra moisture that lasts. We finish the treatment with multi-wavelength LED phototherapy to treat acne and redness and promote collagen production.
Chemical Peels
What it is
Chemical peels are a non-invasive damaged skin treatment that helps to reduce multiple skin concerns by gently removing the damaged top skin layers. We customize each chemical peel based on your unique skin type and concerns.
A custom chemical peel takes between 30 and 45 minutes and recovery time varies between none to 2 weeks, depending on treatment depth. It can treat the following concerns:
- Wrinkles
- Scars
- Acne
- Age spots
- Sun damage
How it helps damaged skin
An Envision medical professional performs your chemical peel to smooth your skin by removing the damaged layers to treat pigmentation. We use a safe chemical solution to gently exfoliate the skin, causing the older dead skin cells to peel and flake off. Chemical peels take multiple sessions, but they require less downtime than lasers, making them a popular choice for patients.
Microneedling
What it is
Microneedling is a skin rejuvenation technique where we use tiny (micro) needles to puncture the top layer of your skin. This creates micro-wounds on your skin’s surface to stimulate natural healing process & collagen production to help improve a wide range of textural skin concerns!
These 30 minute treatments have minimal to no recovery time and help improve:
- Uneven skin tone
- Texture
- Mild wrinkles
- Fine lines
- Enlarged pores
- Acne scars
- Scars
- Stretch marks
- Skin laxity
How it helps damaged skin
We use an Eclipse Micro-Pen at Envision to stimulate your body’s collagen production by strengthening your skin’s deeper layers with increased collagen production. Over time, this plumps and revitalizes your skin over time to smooth the outer surface and improve skin’s appearance. We also offer Intracel, a microneedling with radio-frequency treatment for more dramatic results!
Preventing sun damage and discoloration| Damaged skin treatments in Rochester
So we have a lot of options to help correct damaged skin concerns, but what about preventing it from happening again?! Let’s go over some of our top tips for protecting your skin from sun damage
Wear all forms of sun protection
This seems super obvious, but we always encourage our patients to do their best to protect their skin using sunscreen, hats, sunglasses, and clothing.
Sunscreen is the #1 way to protect your skin from sun damage (at least SPF 30). With so many options out there, you’re bound to find one you like! There are even tinted sunscreen options to give you some coverage while protecting your skin at the same time. In all seasons and indoors or outdoors, sunscreen is your friend.
Other accessories can help prevent damaged skin. We recommend sunglasses that block both UVA and UVB light to protect your sensitive eyes. Sunglasses also help prevent you from squinting, an expression that deepens lines and wrinkles around the delicate eye area.
Hats and clothing are another great way to keep your skin covered and protected. While sunglasses might make you feel more comfortable out in the sun, this still leaves areas like your forehead susceptible to harmful rays. Find a style of hat you love to protect your face and back of your neck for further sun safety! There are also a ton of types of sun-protective clothing with sun shirts, swimsuits, t-shirts, jackets, and more
Plan ahead
Another great way to limit your sun exposure is to plan your outdoor time according to UV index. The UV index has a scale from low to high risk for how strong the sun is each day according to your location. The higher the rating, the stronger its effect on your skin is.
You can check the day’s UV index using your zip code or city name + state and plan your day from there!
Stay in the shade
When all else fails, stay in the shade while you’re outdoors to help protect your skin. An umbrella, shady tree, porch overhang, or something similar can all help limit your UV ray exposure and protect your skin.
